DePIN — Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks — describes real-world hardware networks (wireless coverage, compute, storage, sensors) that are built and owned by many independent operators instead of a single company, coordinated and paid through a shared token instead of a corporate payroll. It's a model for building infrastructure that would otherwise take a large company's balance sheet to deploy.

Infrastructure Without the Balance Sheet

Traditional infrastructure — cell towers, data centers, sensor networks — is expensive to build and slow to expand, because a single company has to own and finance every piece of hardware before it can generate any value. DePIN networks flip that: individual operators buy and host the hardware, the network coordinates and verifies the coverage or service it provides, and operators are paid in the network's token for the value they contribute. Coverage grows wherever someone is willing to host a device, not just wherever a company decides to invest.
