The A1 is the top audio position on a show. They own PA design and system tuning, gain structure and I/O architecture, and either the mix itself or oversight of it. On a complex event, the A1 is responsible for every sound the audience hears — from system check through final walkout.
What the Role Owns
Responsibilities
PA System Design & Tuning
Designs the speaker system layout, rigs or directs the rig, and tunes the system to the room.
Gain Structure & I/O
Sets and manages gain structure from source to speaker, and owns the I/O patch for the entire show.
The Mix
Operates the front-of-house mix, or oversees it and provides direction to additional audio operators on the call.
Signal Path Integrity
Ensures every audio signal arrives where it needs to go, at the right level, without noise or interference.
Coordination
Liaises with the EIC on cross-discipline system issues (timing, video playback audio, comms) and with production on show requirements.
