Engineer in Charge

Oversees the entire video village and is accountable for the integrity of the video output as a whole. Ensures every position — switching, cameras, playback, graphics, record — is operating to spec, and serves as the primary point of contact for the A1, producers, and production managers. The EIC coordinates signal flow, leads troubleshooting, and directs the rest of the video team so each operator can stay focused on their seat. On larger shows, the EIC is the senior video role on site.

What the Role Owns

Responsibilities

Video Village Oversight Accountable for the integrity of the entire video output. Every position — switching, cameras, playback, graphics, record — operates to spec, or the EIC addresses it.
Signal Flow Coordination Designs and confirms the complete signal path: inputs, routing, distribution, processing, and outputs. Nothing on the video side is an afterthought.
Directing the Video Team Directs every downstream video position and keeps each operator focused on their seat. QA across the entire video side is the EIC's responsibility.
Primary Point of Contact Serves as the video department's face to the A1, producers, and production managers. Communicates system status, flags issues, and manages expectations in real time.
Live Troubleshooting When something fails during a show, the EIC diagnoses and resolves it — or directs the correct position to do so — without stopping the show.
