The Role

The Technical Director (TD) owns the complete technical scope of a production — from pre-show system design through load-out. The TD maps signal flow across all disciplines, coordinates between audio, video, lighting, and staging departments, resolves cross-discipline conflicts in routing, timing, and power, and is the primary technical liaison with production management and venue technical staff.

On broadcast shows, the TD oversees the relationship between the live event system and the broadcast plant. On large corporate productions, the TD manages the technical department heads and ensures every system is integrated, tested, and ready before the first cue. A TD is the most senior technical role on the call.
